If you are scheduled for a dental cleaning with one of our dental hygienists, note that dental cleanings always take place after an examination. It’s best if you schedule your cleaning once every six months. During your cleaning, you can expect the following:
- Plaque and tartar elimination: Plaque is a bacteria-rich film that develops on teeth. This film degrades the enamel and the dentin in the tooth over time, representing the start of tooth decay. Plaque eventually hardens and turns into tartar, which is considerably more difficult to remove and more damaging to your teeth and gums. Your dental hygienist will use specialized tools to remove all plaque and tartar from your teeth, and will rinse your mouth during and after this procedure.
- Polishing: After the teeth have been cleaned, polish is applied to remove any stains and plaque buildup that were missed during the initial plaque and tartar removal. This polish will also renew and strengthen the enamel of your teeth, making them resistant to future decay
