Fillings, Crowns, and Root Canals

The inside of your teeth need proper care too.

Midtown Dental offers fillings for patients with cavities. Most fillings take the form of a liquid cement-like substance poured into the cavity through a drilled hole after the decay has been removed.

Crowns are coverings that enclose your entire tooth to improve its appearance and protect it against disease as well as decay. Though crowns can be manufactured in many different ways, porcelain is the most common. Crowns can be altered to match the colour of your teeth.

Crowns are needed in the following situations:

  • To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold a cracked tooth together
  • To restore severely worn down or broken teeth
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To cover misshapen or severely discoloured teeth
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To make cosmetic modification

Root canals are performed when the semi-soft pulp tissue inside your tooth becomes infected. The pulp is where a tooth’s nerves and blood vessels are located, providing sustenance and sensation to the teeth. When the pulp is infected, the nerves and blood vessels need to be removed. A hole is drilled into the tooth, and the infected tissue is manually extracted. After thorough disinfection, a crown in placed over the tooth to protect it from further harm.

Signs when a root canal is needed:

  • Severe toothache pain upon chewing or application of pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures
  • Discolouration (darkening) of the tooth
  • Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums
